THE ART ON STREET

The City

Salvador, Bahia

Salvador has become an open gallery. A shop-window for artists and graffitist. In every point of town one passes through, both in the city center or around the other areas, you could find a piece of art. They are spread everywhere: avenues, walls, fences, tunnels, railings, slopes. "It's a way graffitists found to communicate with the people. To make people think at the traffic jam, a feeling of interpreting that art. At an art gallery, the work is restrained", said the artist Ademar Galvão, owner of the Gallery Arte Viva. Graffito in the form of protests, stencil, bomb, tags. Oil paintings, ceramic mosaics, multicolored or single colored tiles making human and animal figures, graffito, etc.

Certainly, not everybody admired this type of art. Some think it is visual pollution! However, artists such as Antonello Labate, Bel Borba, Roque, Leonel Mattos, Gilson Maciel, Inha, César Carvalho, Paulo Mello, Daniela Morozini, Eliezer Nobre, Gustavo Moreno, Jaime Figura, Tatau, Denis Sena, Reginaldo Bonfim, besides crews of graffitists EGS, Nova10Ordem, Calangos de Rua, TF, Grafqmia, FC, IUC, União Caça Muros, M.P.E., MRS, 071, Oclan, Visão Urbana, Turbilhão Urbano, MGN, among others, contribute to the beauty of our city. Art on the Street also allows a historical register, when they exhibit works that represent a time that has passed, swallowed by the non-stop urban mutation of the metropolis.
